I've been sharing pictures of our old cinema which has rather a sad history continuing with the theme of entertainment the second subject is the Alhambra, opening in 1922 it was intended as a theatre but was largely used as a cinema, on building it was the largest brick building in Dunfermline. Perhaps one of it’s highlights was the presentation of the freedom of the town to the then Duke and Duchess of York in 1928 the couple becoming more familiarly known as King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1936. The Queen consort became more familiar to us as the Queen Mother a title she took on the coronation of our late Queen to avoid confusion. It became a bingo Hall from until 2006 but has retained much of its original features including the category B Egyptian Classical and Art Deco Interior. After closing in 2006 its future was uncertain, however after successful fundraising the venue was refurbished and opened its doors again in 2008 as a theatre and music venue. Historically Dunfermline has had other cinemas and theatres now long gone although interestingly the interior of the Opera House was removed before the theatre was demolished in 1982 to make way for the new shopping centre, 4 years later it was relocated as the Harold G and Esther M Merz theatre at the Asolo Centre for the performing arts in Sarasota Florida. In order to challenge myself I thought I'd take some pictures at night when the theatre is lit up in welcome.
