209/365 28 July 2022 We realised today that both boys require the family tent at the same time, but in different places next month. So we dug out the very old Union Jack tent, which I bought at a knock down price from Millets (remember them?!) when the kids were tiny, and things bedecked with the Union flag didn't have such a bad rep. We reckoned it might not be received too well in the French camp site Son 1 was heading for, so Son 2 agreed to use it in the safer environment of a friend's back garden in Chester. Since it hasn't been used for so long they decided to test it out on our very crispy lawn. The boys also declared that today was laundry day. So many nearly-white t-shirts! *Grumpy old woman alert!* I also spent some time watching Scott Kelby's 'travel photo' segment in the BHP video series, and I have to say it made me feel quite uncomfortable in places. There is no doubt he takes some great photos but I had hoped for a more enlightened approach. Clearly the principles he described can be applied even close to home, but I struggled to engage with his white male gaze attitude, his rather casual assumption of permission to take photos of 'locals', especially in poorer countries, and the amount of carbon intensive travel he clearly undertakes in order to get the pictures when it's impact on the climate is so well known π #hilsdickson365
